In this lesson, students are introduced to Oakland artist, Pallavi Sarup and her piece "Watan Blues," a fabric butterfly that carries her grandparents' story of the 1947 Partition of India. Through a compare-and-contrast T-chart, students connect monarch migration to Pallavi's family history and their own, then create their own dyed-fabric butterfly and artist statement reflecting their family's journey. By the end, they understand that art can hold a family's history across generations, even for those who weren't there to live it.
This lesson can be used for Art, perfect for grades 6-8, adaptable for grades 9-12.

This curriculum was created for REALSOUL's "Distance Between: Stories of Refuge, Remembering, and Return" (2026). It would not have been possible without our partners: San Francisco Arts Commission, Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center, the Association of Chinese Teachers, and San Francisco Unified School District.
